For sale fake SSD drives from Samsung

For sale fake SSD drives from Samsung. Some Samsung NVMe SSD units, the 980 Pro model in the 2TB variant, are also found in circulation at prices that are too low compared to the normal list price, so low as to seem impossible: what seems like a bargain is actually counterfeit units. false that do not allow to obtain the performance possible with the real PCIe Gen 4.0 SSD from the manufacturer.

Oppo Find X6 Pro is the Android with superpowers

It is essentially a completely different product, with much more modest performance than that offered by the original unit. There are bogus SSD units sold as if they were from Samsung, on which there is a simple sticker to deceive unsuspecting buyers.

How fake SSD drives deceive users?

The fake SSD units in question seem well made and to complete the illusion there is also the recognition as a unit actually produced by Samsung from software such as Magician for managing the manufacturer’s SSD units. The Tom’s Hardware site reports that when testing a fake drive, it shows 50-60% lower performance than the (theoretical) 7,000 MB per second of a real Samsung 980 Pro SSD.

Removing the sticker reveals the presence of 3D NAND memories instead of the new V6 V-NAND TLC memories, and the use of an unbranded controller. All of these elements lower the speed to 4,800 MB/s, making them unsuitable for example with a console like the PS5 for which Sony suggests units that support sequential read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or higher.

The SSD shock isn’t just in the price

It is not the first time that counterfeit storage units have been put up for sale and for some time now, fake SSD units have been circulating on various online sales sites at absurd prices, devices not only with poor performance but also unreliable, capable of jeopardizing data.

A classic are the fake 20 or 30TB SSDs, sold at prices that are too good to be true: opening them, inside you discover at best a common (and slow) USB stick of a few GB, reprogrammed to show an apparent many TBs.

High risk of data loss

Of course, when you start to saturate the real storage capacity, the trouble arrives (the oldest data is overwritten, making recovery impossible). Counterfeiters of external SSD drives go so far as to insert real weights inside the cases to deceive the user; when the latter realizes the deception it is often too late.

When you see offers around too tempting to be true, stop and think: it is very likely that the product is counterfeit. SSDs, especially large-capacity ones, are expensive, and it’s impossible for any retailer or website to sell them for a tenth of the normal list price.
