Google officially announces a series of interesting news for the Google Messages app, some of which have already been anticipated by some sightings in recent weeks. In fact, we are talking about reactions to messages, direct responses, transcription of voice messages and more: let’s find out all the small but useful news coming in these weeks.

What’s new for Google Messages, from reactions to direct replies, from reminders to YouTube videos?

Through its official blog, Google has presented several news in distribution on the Google Messages app in these days and in the coming weeks, all designed to improve single conversations or group chats between owners of Android devices (and in some cases iOS) .

The first novelty, already anticipated in recent weeks, consists in the reactions to SMS and MMS messages: at the beginning of the year the app started displaying the emoji reactions of iPhone users on Android smartphones, but now a step forward has been taken, allowing to react with smilies to iPhone users’ SMS. RCS support remains the ideal solution, but Google is making sure that users of the robot can have a way to react to messages.

Another novelty is the direct replies to messages, particularly useful in conversations and group chats to keep some order. With RCS activated, you will soon be able to hold down on a message and quote it while providing a reply. In addition, the Mountain View company is making voice messages more accessible: through machine learning, the Voice Message Transcription function is able to automatically transcribe audio messages; very useful in case you are in a noisy or crowded place. This novelty is compatible with Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Samsung Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy Z Fold4.

The news doesn’t stop there: Google Messages integrates reminders directly into the app, which help you remember important issues without having to switch between apps. You can set reminders to remind you to call someone, to remember to make an appointment or for anything else: just choose a time and the app will take care of it. By saving the birthday in the Contacts app, the Messages app can send a reminder. Also not bad is the news regarding YouTube videos, which can now be seen without leaving the app (the ads in this case will also be present for Premium users).

Another change concerns messages that include addresses, codes or telephone numbers: the app is able to underline this kind of messages with a star, in order to facilitate their “repechage” within long conversations. Messages can also recognize text such as “Can you speak now?”, Showing the icon to make a phone call, voice or video, or it can suggest adding events to the calendar.

The app now works on many other devices, from the phone to the Chromebook, passing through the smartwatch through Google Assistant. In some countries, Google is experimenting with a feature that allows you to chat directly with businesses found through Search and Maps, so that the conversation remains in one place, private and safe. In addition, Big G has entered into an agreement with United Airlines that allows RCS messages to be sent over the airline’s Wi-Fi.

Finally, Google is refreshing the app icon, along with that of the Phone and Contacts apps. All three icons are designed to fit the Material You themes introduced with Android 12.
