To set up custom spatial audio, you need an iPhone with iOS 16 or later with a TrueDepth (Face ID) camera. Additionally, the feature is only available on AirPods Pro (1st or 2nd generation), AirPods Max, AirPods (3rd generation), and Beats Fit Pro.

How to activate custom spatial audio on AirPods

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. On iPhone, go to Settings> [your spatial audio-enabled device]> Custom Spatial Audio> Configure Custom Spatial Audio.
  2. Now you need to acquire the front view: hold the iPhone at a distance of about 30 cm directly in front of you, then position your face in the camera frame, then slowly move your head to complete a circle and show all parts of the face. Tap Continue.
  3. At this point you need to acquire a view of the right ear, so hold the iPhone with your right hand. Move your right arm 45 degrees to the right, then slowly turn your head to the left. To acquire a view of the left ear, hold the iPhone with your left hand, move your left arm 45 degrees to the left, then slowly turn your head to the right. The audio and visual cues will help you complete the setup.

To turn off custom spatial audio, go to Settings> [your spatial audio-enabled device]> Custom spatial audio> Stop using custom spatial audio.
