How to measure walking stability with iPhone

How to measure walking stability with iPhone? Three of the lesser-known features available on the iPhone 8 and later models, there is “walking stability”, available with iOS 15 and later systems, useful for viewing stability and the classification of posture and obtaining information on the risk of falls.

Apple explains that walking stability uses custom algorithms to evaluate the user’s balance, stability and coordination via the built-in motion sensors on the phone. While walking with the iPhone, the function monitors important mobility-related metrics, such as walking speed, stride length, double step time and asymmetrical walking. These metrics are used to determine the stability and classification of the user’s walk.

Walking stability is classified as “Adequate”, “Low” or “Very Low”. You can also choose to be notified when stability is detected as low or very low.

Having enabled the sharing of health data, the user can also choose to automatically share data and notifications relating to walking stability with friends or family.

Configure Walking Stability

  • On the iPhone, open the Health app
  • Scroll down to find the “Walk stability notifications” section and choose “Configure”
  • Tap “Next” and follow the instructions on the screen (confirming your details and activating any notifications).

As we walk, we keep the iPhone in the front pocket or in a pocket close to the waist. We will be notified if the stability level is low enough to pose a risk of falls over the next year.

To view the walking stability history, just open the Health app, tap Browse> Movement, then “Walk stability”.

If during the configuration phase we added walking stability to the Favorites section, we can access it from the Summary panel in the Health app.
