Mini LED market wobbles, Apple will increasingly focus on OLEDs

Mini LED market wobbles, Apple will increasingly focus on OLEDs. One of Apple’s major mini-LED suppliers says demand for the technology for displays in consumer products is declining as Apple aims to shift its iPad and MacBook lineup to OLED displays in the coming years.

A new report from DigiTimes citing industry sources within Epistar, which has long supplied mini-LED displays to Apple, said demand for mini-LED displays for use in consumer electronic devices is declining. Technology, on the other hand, will find more and more space in car infotainment systems during the course of 2023.

A report last week had suggested that Samsung is now prioritizing the development of specific types of OLED displays that Apple plans to use in upcoming iPad Pro models. Recall that according to reports, Apple is expected to announce the first iPad Pro with an OLED display in 2024, and this has caused mini-LED suppliers to look at other applications for their displays, according to the report.

In addition to an OLED iPad Pro, Apple is also believed to launch a 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED display in 2024. Apple is also considering using an OLED panel in an upcoming iPhone SE refresh, though more likely the company will decide to use an LCD or OLED display in this smartphone model, as the reliable display analyst Ross Young also thinks.
