Netflix stops sharing passwords and accounts from 2023

Netflix has stopped sharing passwords and accounts since 2023. The time is coming: The next phase of Netflix’s crackdown on shared accounts and passwords is upon us: the company announced during its latest quarterly earnings conference that it will charge customers a monthly fee additional to those who share their login credentials. All starting from the beginning of 2023.

This move is an expansion of a pilot program currently running in Latin America that charges extra for “extra user” sub-accounts, i.e. someone who logs into their Netflix account without being a family member.

The news comes as Netflix attempts to get back into growth to keep investors at bay after confirming it lost subscribers earlier this year. With the help of the Jeffrey Dahmer series, as well as the fourth season of Stranger Things, the company was able to add more than 2.4 million subscribers in its third quarter.

Netflix has not yet announced the extra pricing for account sharing, though they are expected to follow the “quarter the base rate” scheme applied with the pilot program. A more robust estimate indicates a slightly lower price than the new low-cost subscription with ads, to entice users who have previously shared another user’s account password.

An estimated 222 million paying households share accounts and passwords with another 100 million households that Netflix wants to monetize. For folks who want to avoid those fees, Netflix has unveiled an account migration tool that will transfer a user’s sub-account data (viewing history, recommendations, and the like) to their new standalone subscription.
