Tesla has released an outbred AirPower charging station for simultaneously charging three devices. Tesla today announced Tesla Wireless Charging, a $300 wireless charger that can charge up to three Qi devices simultaneously.

The concept is somewhat similar to the AirPower that Apple wanted to release, the Tesla charger can charge up to three devices, with up to 15 watts of power allocated to each device.

Tesla says the charging mat’s angular design was inspired by the look of the Cybertruck, featuring an aluminum chassis with an Alcantara surface and a detachable magnetic stand that can be used to charge at an angle.

Inspired by the Cybertruck’s angular design and metal styling, our wireless charging platform delivers 15W of fast charging per device for up to three devices simultaneously. Its sleek design consists of an aluminum body, premium Alcantara surface, and a detachable magnetic stand that allows you to place the charger horizontally or at an angle for a better view. Featuring FreePower(R) technology that charges your Qi-enabled devices such as phones or headphones placed anywhere on its surface without precise positioning.

In September 2017, Apple announced AirPower, a multi-device charger designed to charge iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods at the same time. Apple wanted users to be able to place and charge their devices anywhere on AirPower, but the overlapping wireless coils required to do so became a problem, with Apple having issues with heat dissipation and interference that prevented the device from working. Though AirPower was due out in 2018, it never went on sale and Apple confirmed its cancellation in 2019.

The Tesla charging mat uses FreePower, a technology from Aira that has been used in other wireless charging platforms such as Nomad’s Base Station Pro. The Nomad Pro base station also supported charging from anywhere on the charging platform, but it had problems and did not work well with the iPhone 12 and later due to firmware issues.

While Tesla’s concept is similar to what Apple hoped to achieve with AirPower, it’s limited to Qi-based devices like the iPhone and AirPods, and it doesn’t support the Apple Watch.
