AirPods Max USB-C Upgrade and New Colors Expected by Late Next Year. The transition to USB-C charging for Apple’s premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max, may not be as immediate as some had hoped. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his “Power On” newsletter, Apple enthusiasts will likely have to wait until late next year to see a USB-C port on the AirPods Max, along with the debut of new color options.

This anticipated update aligns with the European Union’s push for a unified charging solution across mobile phones, tablets, cameras, and other electronic devices, aiming to reduce consumer inconvenience and electronic waste. By 2026, the mandate will extend to include personal computers as well.

While the upcoming iteration of the AirPods Max is expected to feature this new charging standard and aesthetic refreshments, Gurman does not predict any major technological leaps in the near term, such as the introduction of the H2 chip. The current H1 chip in each ear cup, responsible for audio processing, may still hold its ground in the new release.

Despite this, Gurman suggests that Apple’s plans are not set in stone, leaving room for potential advancements. These could include the integration of the H2 chip, bringing enhancements in noise cancellation, 3D audio quality, and battery life.

The shift towards USB-C will not only affect the AirPods Max but also a range of Apple accessories. Recent buzz indicates that updated versions of the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad might be on the horizon, all equipped with standard USB-C ports for charging.

As for the current AirPods Max, introduced in December 2020, they remain a high-fidelity audio option in Apple’s lineup, available in space gray, silver, sky blue, green, and pink. With their over-ear design, these wireless headphones have carved out a niche for those seeking Apple’s blend of style and sound quality.
