Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e Headphones Review: Affordable Excellence

Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e Headphones Review: Affordable Excellence. It’s been a year since I last got my hands on a pair of Bowers & Wilkins headphones, and that experience was with the magnificent PX8. I was thoroughly impressed with them, considering them among the best headphones available. Now, in December, it’s Bowers & Wilkins again, this time with the somewhat complex name – Px7 S2e. These are the second-generation PX7 headphones, but they feel like more than just a mere iteration, sporting the ‘S2e’ suffix, where ‘e’ stands for ‘evolution.’ It may seem intricate, but let’s simplify things and assume these are another impressive addition to Bowers & Wilkins’ lineup. Let’s dive into the details.

Smartphone Shipments Surge Thanks to 5G and iPhone Sales Growth

Design

The Px7 S2e headphones come in four colors: black, blue, green, and grey. While black may be the most practical choice, the other colors add a touch of vibrancy to the design. Surprisingly, even as someone who typically dislikes blue and brown, the blue variant exudes a calm and pleasant aura, with materials that are resistant to stains.

The headphones’ base is crafted from aluminum, complemented by nylon or a similar material for the trim, and eco-leather for added comfort.

The standard accessory package includes a spacious case, charging cables, and a 3.5mm audio cable for connecting to devices with a headphone jack – a thoughtful inclusion.

Comfort is a standout feature. These headphones strike a balance between the heft of AirPods Max and the featherweight feel of Bose headphones, making them suitable for extended wear. The ear cups fit snugly, offering ample space, and the angled placement of the drivers, reminiscent of the PX8, adds a touch of sophistication.

Special appreciation goes to the Bowers & Wilkins app, a highly recommended companion. While the translation may not be perfect, it offers some ingenious features, such as direct podcast links within the app. Additionally, it seamlessly integrates with services like SoundCloud, Deezer, and TuneIn.

The app provides access to various settings, including noise reduction, transparency mode, equalizer, standby timer, wear sensors, and software updates.

Functionality

Switching between modes is straightforward, with a dedicated button for mode selection on the left earphone. The right earphone features standard physical buttons for controls, a welcome departure from finicky touch-sensitive controls. These buttons are finely crafted, responsive, and a joy to use.

The adoption of USB-C for charging is a practical choice, allowing for versatility in power sources. During several days of use outside the studio, I could charge my laptop, smartphone, headphones, and an external battery all from a single power supply – a convenience that shouldn’t be underestimated.

Battery life is commendable, with up to 30 hours of playback time with noise reduction enabled, and a fast charging feature that provides 7 hours of music playback in just 15 minutes. With moderate use, the headphones can easily last for several days.

Noise Cancellation and Transparency

The Px7 S2e headphones appear to have made significant improvements in noise reduction, effectively blocking external sounds while music or other audio is playing. This enhancement should make them suitable for use on flights. However, transparency mode falls slightly short of AirPods Max standards. It performs adequately for conversations in quieter environments but may not excel in noisier outdoor settings.

Sound Quality

The sound quality closely resembles the PX8, although the drivers are different. If the ‘eights’ can be likened to a fine, dry wine, the Px7 S2e is more akin to prosecco – light, effervescent, and fitting for any occasion. This delightful sound is achieved through a well-balanced combination of drivers, enhanced electronics (the company mentions an upgraded DSP processor), and support for various codecs, including AAC and the sophisticated aptX Adaptive. This versatility ensures compatibility with a wide range of devices, and for those seeking a wired connection, the Px7 S2e can be used with a cable.

It’s a slight disappointment that the official website lacks detailed diagrams, photos, or renderings of the drivers, leaving much to the imagination. The headphones are described simply as having “2 x 40mm full-range speakers with bio-cellulose cones.” These exceptional drivers deserve a more thorough spotlight, especially when targeting an audience passionate about sound quality.

Verdict

Priced at $399, the Px7 S2e headphones offer outstanding value. They excel in design, battery life, controls, and essential features. Most importantly, they deliver exceptional sound quality that elevates the listening experience. These headphones are a must-consider for anyone who enjoys quality audio.
