From Sony three portable and powerful wireless microphones for video and streaming. Sony’s range of wireless microphones has just been expanded with three new models capable of making a difference in a wide variety of shooting situations. One is called ECM-W3 and is equipped with a two-channel receiver and two microphones, then there is the ECM-W3S version which uses a single microphone and a single-channel receiver; and then there is the ECM-S1, designed specifically for streaming.

Sony ECM-W3 and Sony ECM-W3S

These two microphones are designed to mainly record blogs and interviews: the W3 is especially strong in one-to-one conversations, while the W3S brings out the best in capturing articulate voices, for even more natural audio.

They are equipped with a multi-interface shoe for Sony cameras, but can also be connected to other devices via USB-C (48 kHz / 24 bit) or via 3.5 mm audio jack.

Both are equipped with an anti-noise filter to reduce noise during digital signal processing, and a cut filter for unwanted low-frequency noise such as that produced by wind or vibrations.

A windscreen is also included to reduce the noise produced by strong wind or breathing hitting the microphone, thus promising clear audio despite environmental interference.

There is a function that suppresses distortion at high volume and one that automatically reduces the audio during high volume recordings.

Both offer LC3Plus codec, low power consumption and minimum latency in Bluetooth 5.3 connection, and are resistant to dust and humidity.

Finally, as regards weight and dimensions, the microphone measures approximately 5.3 x 2.5 x 2.1 centimeters and weighs 17 grams, while the receiver measures 5 x 3.2 x 2.9 centimeters and weighs 25 grams. The package also includes a case to protect and recharge them during travel.

The market launch is scheduled for November at $350** for the W3S and **$470 for the W3.

Sony ECM-S1

This microphone, on the other hand, is for those looking for a compact and lightweight solution that is still capable of recording high-quality audio for podcasts and livestreams. It uses three 14mm units to capture the voice with natural sound and is captured directly in the camera thanks to the wireless connection, thus avoiding that “lag” between audio and image that sometimes occurs in live streaming when transmitting audio and video separately .

The user has an independent selector to adjust the recording level and it is possible to connect a pair of headphones to monitor the audio live. It can work both on battery (maximum 13 consecutive hours) and continuously with direct power if connected to the camera’s MI hot shoe or USB-C cable.

It can record sound in unidirectional, omnidirectional and stereo modes, and thanks to the wide dynamic range it can clearly capture even the faintest sounds. Here too we find an anti-noise filter and one for cutting low-frequency noise, as well as the same Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, USB-C 48 kHz 24 bit and LC3Plus codec that we also find in the other two models.

As regards weights and dimensions, the microphone measures 13.7 x 6.3 x 6.3 centimeters and weighs 160 grams, while the receiver is around 5 x 3.2 x 2.9 centimeters for a weight of just 25 grams.

The anti-popping system is supplied to reduce disturbances caused by breathing or contact with the microphone, and a stand to hold it without hands. Alternatively, you can use the 1/4″ threaded hole to attach it to stands and other third-party accessories.
