Kioxia Launches Groundbreaking 2TB MicroSD, Setting New Storage Record

Kioxia Launches Groundbreaking 2TB MicroSD, Setting New Storage Record. Kioxia, a Toshiba subsidiary, is making headlines in the tech world with its announcement of a groundbreaking 2TB microSD memory card, surpassing the recently unveiled 1.5TB card by SanDisk. This new card not only sets a record in terms of storage capacity but also pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with microSD technology.

SanDisk’s 1.5TB microSD card, available for purchase on Amazon at 178.99 euros, represented a significant advancement in storage technology. However, Kioxia has quickly eclipsed this achievement with their 2TB offering, which is the theoretical limit for current microSD standards.

The new Kioxia card falls into the A1 class, indicating its suitability for storing data and applications. However, it is not designed for recording high-speed video streams, which require greater speed capabilities. This positions the card as an ideal solution for general storage needs rather than specialized high-speed applications.

Set to be released in the next quarter, the Kioxia 2TB EXCERIA PLUS G2 microSD card’s pricing remains undisclosed but is expected to exceed €200. The card boasts read/write speeds of 100/90MB/s and supports U3, V30, and Class 10 standards. While these standards are not the most modern in terms of performance, they still offer substantial speed for a wide range of uses.

In terms of speed, SanDisk’s offering has an edge with speeds up to 150 MB/s. However, both Kioxia and SanDisk face competition from other, faster but less capacious memory cards currently available on the market. Interestingly, SanDisk’s 1.5TB card represents a staggering 12,000-fold increase in capacity compared to the first microSD card, which accompanied the Motorola ROKR, the initial ‘iTunes phone.’

The introduction of a 2TB microSD card aligns with the theoretical limit previously cited by manufacturers. However, the most recent SD standard, SDUC (Ultra Capacity), theoretically allows for capacities up to 128TB. While such capacities are not yet available in the market, they point to the potential for even more significant storage solutions in the future.

MicroSD cards like Kioxia’s are incredibly versatile, enhancing the storage capacity of various devices, including Android phones, tablets, some laptops, and Chromebooks. They are particularly useful for storing large multimedia files, high-resolution photos and videos, music, podcasts, documents, games, and content from streaming services like Netflix.

In summary, Kioxia’s 2TB microSD card represents a significant milestone in storage technology, offering unprecedented capacity for a wide range of digital devices. As the industry continues to push the limits of storage capacity, products like Kioxia’s card are poised to play a crucial role in how we store and access digital content.
