Samsung Display will also open a smartwatch microLED factory

Samsung Display will also open a smartwatch microLED factory. Not only LG but also Samsung will open a factory of MicroLED displays that could be supplied to Apple for future Apple Watches.

The eSIM market is growing and there is already talk of iSIM

The news comes in conjunction with the indiscretion according to which Apple intends to produce its own display of this type for the Apple Watch. This latest rumor was met with skepticism in South Korea and Yi Choong-hoon, CEO and top analyst at UBI Research, explained to the Korea Herald that the production yield of microLEDs is still immature and unstable and even if Apple were to proposing one day on microLED screens will be difficult to commercialize this technology in the short term.

In any case, there is interest from various players in the sector on microLEDs. Analyst Ming-Chi reported last week that Chinese maker BOE will become the top supplier of LTPO displays, overtaking Samsung as Apple’s top supplier for the iPhone. There was no mention of microLED technology for Apple Watch but an unspecified industry source told the Korea Herald that BOE intends to invest $400 million for two new facilities in Vietnam. These facilities should mainly produce OLED panels but some production lines, according to the source of the Korean site, could be destined for the production of microLEDs on behalf of Apple.

The general interest of players in microLEDs is also evident from news reported by ETNews, according to which Samsung Display has started the development project for microLEDs intended for smartwatches from the end of 2022; the goal is the marketing for 2024, exactly the year from which Apple would have decided to use microLEDs on Apple Watch.
