From a technical point of view, Android apps take advantage of the Windows Subsystem for Android, a kernel that works like a virtual machine; PCs with x86 processors (including those from AMD) leverage Intel Bridge Technology, a post-run-time compiler that allows some Android applications not written in Java or compiled to run natively on x86-based devices to run on these devices; in the (few) PCs with ARM processors the execution of Android apps is native.

The mechanism is similar to the one that allows running iPhone apps on macOS (on Macs with Mx processors). Despite various limitations, Windows can run Android apps and future versions of the Microsoft operating system will integrate support for Android 13.

As mentioned, there are various limitations, such as the impossibility of directly running APK files (a container file with the app and all the various support files). Support for Android 13 is built into the latest beta of Windows 11, and Microsoft is reporting improvements to app launch times, stability, clipboard support, features that let you resize the app window, and more.

It is not yet known when the final update will be distributed but it could be a matter of a few weeks at most.
