Google is working on an iOS browser that doesn’t comply with App Store policies

Google is working on a browser for iOS that doesn’t comply with App Store policies. The Register writes that Google Chromium developers are working on an experimental web browser for iOS that will not comply with the rules and restrictions of the App Store.

The browser, which is already under active development, will be built on the Google Blink engine. If Google tries to release this browser in the App Store, nothing will work, because it will not pass Apple’s review.

App Store policies state that browsers for iOS and iPadOS should only use the WebKit engine. Browsers like Chrome and Microsoft Edge are built on top of Chromium for macOS and Windows, while their iOS counterparts must use Apple’s WebKit engine, which makes them similar to Safari.

At the moment, the application is in development, and it does not even have some basic functions yet. Google claims that this is an experimental prototype and will not be made available to users. The company doesn’t want to break Apple’s rules.

However, the Google project shows that the company is waiting for Apple’s rules to change. Perhaps only after that the browser will be released publicly. Many of Apple’s rules violate items in bills that are being introduced in the US.

There are similar bills in the UK, Australia and Japan. Under the new European Union law, Apple will have to allow the use of third-party app stores on its devices as early as next year. Looks like Google is just preparing ahead of time.
