Satellite SOS Features: From iPhone to Samsung’s Upcoming Galaxy Release

Satellite SOS Features: From iPhone to Samsung’s Upcoming Galaxy Release. Apple pioneered the satellite-based emergency SOS feature last year, granting users the capability to interact with emergency services even in the absence of Wi-Fi or cellular networks. With the ‘Where’s2’ app, travelers can ensure their loved ones are updated about their whereabouts when in remote locations.

Tech giants such as Google are actively exploring similar functionalities, and now Samsung has given the green light for this innovative feature to be incorporated into their upcoming Galaxy S24, slated for a January release.

Earlier this year, hints of Samsung venturing into satellite-based SOS were in the air. The recent confirmation from Park Yong, the head of Samsung’s LSI unit, solidifies expectations that top-tier Samsung smartphones will embrace this functionality starting from 2024.

Specifics regarding its application – whether it will be universal across all S24 variants or exclusive to premium models – remain shrouded in mystery.

Anticipation builds for the official unveiling of Samsung’s newest phones, expected either in January or February. For context, Apple’s integration of this feature spans across the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 series, equipped with specialized hardware and software for seamless satellite connectivity.

On the iPhone, the service syncs with dedicated hubs that have professionals trained by Apple. These experts can liaise with PSAPs (Public Safety Answering Points), ensuring users get the required assistance.

While iPhones currently allow satellite messaging strictly for emergency situations, there’s speculation around Samsung potentially expanding this to encompass general satellite-based messaging.

Regarding pricing structures, Apple offers its satellite SOS service complimentary for two years upon the purchase of a new iPhone. The specifics of the post-complimentary period pricing haven’t been disclosed by Apple. To draw a parallel, brands like Garmin currently price similar services at approximately 15 euros a month.
