Apple TV’s new Siri Remote has a USB-C connector, but no cable is included

The new Apple TV Siri Remote has a USB-C connector, but the cable is not included. Along with the new iPads on Tuesday, Apple also announced a new generation of Apple TV 4K with the A15 Bionic chip and HDR10+. The set-top box comes with a new Siri Remote that has a USB-C port instead of Lightning. This is great news, but there is one downside – the company will no longer bundle the cable with the set-top box.

Apple TV will ship without a charging cable for Siri Remote

The new Siri Remote looks exactly like the previous one introduced last year. The only difference is that this year the Siri Remote has a USB-C charging port instead of Lightning. This means users can finally use the same cable they use to charge their iPad, Mac, and any other USB-C-equipped accessory.

But the bad news is, Apple TV no longer comes with a charging cable for the Siri Remote. Apple’s website clearly states that the new Apple TV comes with a Siri remote and power cable in the box, while HDMI and USB-C cables are sold separately.

Previous generations of Apple TVs came with a Lightning to USB-A cable to allow users to charge the Siri Remote’s battery. While USB-C is an open standard, you can use any available cable to charge the remote’s battery.

Apple sells a 1m USB-C cable (which has now been upgraded to a braided version) for $19. Of course, you can find much cheaper third party options.

Back in 2020, Apple began releasing the iPhone and Apple Watch without a power adapter, a move the company said would help reduce carbon emissions and e-waste. However, the company’s decision was widely criticized around the world. In Brazil, Apple was fined for selling an iPhone charger separately.

This makes one wonder if Apple will stop adding charging cables for other products in the future.

What’s new in Apple TV 4K 2022?

The new Apple TV 4K is equipped with the A15 Bionic chip, which is 50% faster than the A12 chip used by the previous generation Apple TV. The new device also supports the HDR10+ standard for Samsung, Panasonic and TCL TVs.

Prices for the new Apple TV 4K start at $129 for the 64GB Wi-Fi model, while the new 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model costs $149. The Apple TV 4K prefix is already available in the official Apple online store, it will begin to arrive to the first buyers and stores on November 4th.
