Hyundai Embraces Tesla’s NACS Charging: A Game-Changer for North American EV Infrastructure

Hyundai Embraces Tesla’s NACS Charging: A Game-Changer for North American EV Infrastructure. In a recent announcement, Hyundai has declared its intentions to embrace Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) by the end of 2024 in the U.S., with Canada hopping on board in early 2025. A surprising move considering Hyundai, with its celebrated Ioniq series, hadn’t yet aligned with major manufacturers leveraging Tesla’s NACS.

This collaboration means Hyundai’s electric offerings, such as the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and the soon-to-be-launched Ioniq 7, will enjoy charging access across more than 12,000 Superchargers throughout North America by the close of 2024. For Hyundai drivers, this will potentially boost the fast charger count they can tap into, nearing a staggering 30,000 stations continent-wide.

Those in possession of both newer and older models fitted with CCS chargers will experience compatibility by the start of 2025.

Hyundai isn’t stopping at Tesla’s network. In a pursuit to enhance EV infrastructure, partnerships with industry giants such as BMW, GM, Honda, and Mercedes are in motion to spawn a North American grid of roughly 30,000 chargers. The U.S. can expect its inaugural stations in mid-2024, with Canada to follow suit shortly after.

The scarcity of swift chargers has historically acted as a bottleneck for the transition to electric vehicles. Consequently, many manufacturers are seeking bridges like Tesla to temporarily alleviate this.

On the sales front, Hyundai Motors, Kia included, recently leapfrogged GM, clinching the second spot in U.S. EV sales. However, the leading contender, Tesla, remains ahead by a significant margin, boasting sales of 300,000 additional EVs in the previous year.
