The development of this AI semiconductor has been a year-long endeavor, focusing on achieving an energy efficiency that is approximately eight times higher than that of competitor chips, such as those produced by Nvidia. This innovative product is anticipated to power Naver’s AI model, HyperCLOVA, enhancing its performance and efficiency.

The announcement was made during the “4th High-Level Strategic Dialogue on Semiconductors for AI,” held on December 19 in Seoul’s Seocho district. The Ministry of Science and Information and Communications Technology spearheaded this event, highlighting the importance of advancements in semiconductor technology for AI applications.

The AI semiconductor, a product of the Naver and Samsung Electronics partnership, is presented in the form of a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). An FPGA is a type of semiconductor that can be reprogrammed by developers, primarily used in the prototype stage before transitioning to mass production. This particular semiconductor is specialized for ‘inference’ tasks – the process of deriving logical conclusions using new data after an AI model has been trained.

Naver reported that this AI semiconductor achieved eight times more energy efficiency compared to similar products from companies like Nvidia. This efficiency is attributed to the integration of energy-efficient and compact Double Data Rate (LPDDR) DRAM memory, which significantly enhances overall efficiency. The result is a semiconductor that can perform large-scale computational tasks with less energy, making it both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

The collaboration between Samsung and Naver began with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) focused on developing semiconductor solutions for AI. This partnership has since evolved into a practical working group, culminating in the creation of this high-efficiency AI semiconductor. The successful implementation of this chip in Naver’s HyperCLOVA is expected to be a milestone in AI technology, showcasing the potential of energy-efficient computing in large-scale AI applications.
