Sony PS VR2 likes but sells little, that’s why. The virtual reality headset for Playstation 5 is very popular, but sells little. It could even be a disaster if the price is not cut. And so, those who haven’t bought it yet could receive a drop in price as a reward for waiting.

Google attacks Microsoft for anti-competitive practices

Yes, because if the company wants to avoid a complete disaster, as a new report claims, the PS5 headset will have to be revised in the list price. Launched a few weeks ago, sales have been low. There are rumors that PlayStation may have to reduce the price to stimulate sales.

The sales estimates come for the moment from the research company IDC, with no official sales numbers from Sony or PlayStation yet. The initial plan was to produce around two million units for the launch of PS VR2, but so far only around 270,000 will be sold worldwide, despite the console’s record sales now available everywhere.

According to IDC’s vice president of data and analysis, Francisco Jeronimo, the main problem of the PS VR2 is its too high price. The headset retails for $549.99 / €599.99 / £529.99 and for those who don’t already own a PS5, the initial cost is practically doubled. In fact, the headset alone is more expensive than the console itself. Jeronimo said that the majority of consumers, due to the current economic environment characterized by rising costs of living, interest rates and layoffs, do not consider VR headsets as a priority.

Jeromino also said that a price cut on the PS VR2 will be necessary to avoid a complete disaster for the new PlayStation product.

It must be said that those who own the PS VR2 seem to appreciate it a lot. Next-generation VR is well received by the public, and competition will certainly intensify as Apple enters the mixed reality headset market.

Apple’s long-awaited Reality Pro, Cupertino’s mixed headset, is said to cost even more than the PS VR2, around $3,000 in its first variant. However, this first version should be reserved for developers, while a cheaper version could be in the next few years. The announcement of the headset could be very close, for some it will take place at WWDC23 in June.
