Apple adds Dvorak layout to iOS 16 keyboard

Apple has added a Dvorak layout to the iOS 16 keyboard. Apple very quietly added the Dvorak layout to the built-in keyboard in iOS 16. If you don’t know what it is, then don’t be discouraged: almost no one knows this.

The Dvorak layout was invented by University of Washington professor August Dvorak and William Dilley in 1936. It was supposed to be an alternative to the QWERTY layout, but did not receive much popularity. But it’s interesting:

In general, for an ordinary English-speaking user, it causes about the same stupor as a Russian-speaking user who saw the layout in Bulgarian:

However, the Dvorak layout is still the same English language. And some people use it. One of them is Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

The essence of the Dvorak layout is to evenly distribute the load between all your fingers when touch typing. And it makes sense when using a physical keyboard, which looks like this with punctuation marks:

In general, if you use English layouts and you suddenly become interested in using the Dvorak keyboard, then installing it is quite simple:

“Settings” → “General” → “Keyboard” → “Keyboards”

On the keyboard selection page, you should have the English layout selected. It has a choice between four layouts, one of which is Dvorak:
