Comparison of iPhone 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max

Comparison of iPhone 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max. The appearance of the Pro line in the iPhone lineup was a justified step. Still, not all users need high-performance fashion technologies, but it is also impossible to leave them without the opportunity to enjoy all the capabilities of a smartphone. iPhone 14 Pro became the third device in the TOP line of Apple smartphones. Of course, with the evolution of basic models, their advanced counterparts also evolve. In the fall of 2022, Apple’s new flagship, the iPhone 14 Pro, was introduced, which replaced the iPhone 13 Pro. And this time, the changes were quite obvious. It was the iPhone 14 Pro that now rightfully took the throne of the company’s flagship, and its predecessor quietly left the Apple official sales page.

Apple on the iOS 16 Clipboard pop-up: “It doesn’t have to work this way”

But this does not mean at all that the iPhone 13 Pro is suddenly rapidly outdated. It’s still a powerful and cool device, and it’s not that difficult to find it on sale from numerous resellers. Moreover, with the release of the new flagship, the price of last year’s model will inevitably decrease. Let’s compare the two latest professional iPhone models.

External differences between iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max

The common features of modern Apple smartphones were set back by the iPhone 12. However, here you can see the continuity of the iPhone 4 and the relationship with the current iPads. Having chosen the basic design, Apple makes small adjustments to it, but no more. iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro received a body and frame made of surgical stainless steel with flat and chopped side edges and rounded corners. The rear panel is also the same – a module of three cameras, LiDAR and a flash is located at the top left, while it itself is covered with frosted glass. If the Apple logo in the middle disappeared somewhere, it would surprise everyone and cause a lot of theories. And so everything is unchanged. Looking at the back panel, it will hardly be possible to clearly distinguish the iPhone 13 Pro from the iPhone 14 Pro, except by color.

But the front panel of smartphones is different. Almost the entire front part is given to the screen, it stretches from edge to edge and is protected by a particularly durable Ceramic Shield glass. But if the iPhone 13 Pro was released with a classic bang at the top, then in the iPhone 14 Pro it finally disappeared. Its place was taken by an oval neckline, a kind of pill, called the “dynamic island”.

And without a cutout, nowhere – it is needed for cameras and sensors. Apple promises to beat this element in every possible way. So the annoying useless cutout was replaced by something new, perhaps even comfortable. And this island is a clear visual difference between the new iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro. Thanks to him, now the screen occupies 87% of the panel area, we managed to win an extra percentage.

The dimensions of the models have also changed. The iPhone 14 Pro is a little taller, a little thicker and a little heavier than the iPhone 13 Pro. But the larger model has become a little thicker, but at the same time more compact. Of course, we are talking about some fractions of millimeters and a few grams. The user will hardly notice the difference, but Apple can always explain the increase in size with new productive hardware and an improved battery.

The iPhone 13 Pro is currently available in five colors, while the iPhone 14 Pro comes in just four. However, do not consider the novelty deprived. It is worth remembering that last year the “proshka” initially received four colors, the fifth was added to it in the spring. It is likely that the same is expected for the iPhone 14 Pro.

So, the iPhone 13 Pro comes in Silver, Graphite, Gold, Sky Blue, and the new Alpine Green.

But the iPhone 14 Pro received other shades that, if desired, will distinguish it from its older counterpart: deep purple, space black. But the gold and silver colors have been preserved, they can cause confusion.

Conclusion: Externally, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro are similar. They have the same body shape, the arrangement of elements on the body and the back panel. Even the colors overlap. But one element will clearly distinguish the 2022 model from last year’s – an island on the screen instead of a bang. This noticeably refreshes the design, making it more modern, and the cutout itself is also functional.

Display iPhone 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max

There are two models in each of these iPhone Pro generations. The regular Pros got a 6.1-inch screen, while the larger Pro Max got a 6.7-inch screen.

This is a cool Super Retina XDR display made using OLED technology. It allows you to achieve a deep and most natural black color. All four smartphones received support for HDR technologies, True Tone, P3 wide color gamut, haptic feedback, contrast ratio up to 2000000:1, brightness of 1000 nits. But if the iPhone 13 Pro in HDR mode raises the brightness to 1200 nits, then the iPhone 14 Pro can raise it to 1600 nits. What’s more, in bright sunlight, the 2022 model can deliver up to 2000 nits of brightness in general.

All smartphones thanks to ProMotion technology have an adaptive screen frequency. If necessary, it can rise to 120 Hz, which makes scrolling on the smartphone as smooth as possible. On the other hand, in order to save energy, the frequency can be reduced to 10 Hz. But the iPhone 14 Pro has another feature – Always-On. The picture can remain on the screen even when the screen is locked. To do this, it is updated at a frequency of 1 Hz.

The function is very convenient and long-awaited, it has already been tested in this form on the Apple Watch. Moreover, for this function to work, the iPhone 14 Pro even has a Display Engine coprocessor installed. It is also responsible for smoothing the animation around the new cutout.

There is a difference between the models in screen resolution, and even firmware of the same size:

  • iPhone 13 Pro – 2532 × 1170 piksel, 460 ppi yoğunluk
  • iPhone 14 Pro – 2556 × 1179 piksel, 460 ppi yoğunluk
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max – 2778 × 1284 piksel, 458 ppi yoğunluk
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max – 2796 × 1290 piksel, 460 ppi yoğunluk

For new products, the resolution has slightly increased, most likely due to the appearance of that same island.

Conclusion: Externally, the screens of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro are different – an island has appeared instead of a bang. And it’s not just about looks, Apple will clearly play with the new element by making it a more useful part of the user interface.

Processor, RAM and storage iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max

From year to year, a new generation of iPhone gets a new chip. In Phone 14, this tradition was interrupted. Base models retained last year’s chip, but both iPhone 14 Pros have received an update. So, the iPhone 13 Pro is based on the Apple A15 Bionic chip. It has six cores, two of which are productive and 4 are energy efficient. It is made using 5 nm technology. The GPU has 5 cores and the Neural Engine has 16 cores.

The iPhone 14 Pro has a new chip, A16 Bionic. True, in fact it is all the same, an optimized solution with increased frequencies. The layout is identical – 6 main cores (2 + 4), 5 GPU cores and 16 neural processor cores. Through the use of a 4-nanometer process technology, it was possible to achieve an increase in operating frequencies and the number of transistors. In general, the speed of the new chip increased by 10-15%, but at the same time it began to consume less energy.

The amount of RAM in the iPhone 14 Pro has not changed either. These are all the same 6 GB that the predecessor had. But Apple has switched to a different type – the iPhone 14 Pro uses a faster quad-channel LPDDR5. The options for the volume of the internal drive also remained the same: 128, 256, 512 GB and 1 TB.

Conclusion: I must say that the iPhone 13 Pro already had a powerful chip capable of solving almost all the tasks assigned to it. It is no coincidence that the A15 Bionic is installed in the new iPhone 14. But the Pro models could not be left unchanged, they received the A16 Bionic, an optimized version of its predecessor. RAM will become a little faster, although its volume has not changed. Drive options are the same for both series.

iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max Cameras

And although outwardly the camera module in the iPhone 14 Pro looks the same as it was in the iPhone 13 Pro, there are changes in the filling, and considerable ones.

They concern primarily the main camera. The iPhone 14 Pro has a new 48-megapixel f/1.78 wide-angle module with Dual Pixel phase detection autofocus, while last year’s model had a 12-megapixel f/1.5 module with the same autofocus. The second camera is an ultra-wide camera, the iPhone 14 Pro has an aperture of f/2.2, while the iPhone 13 Pro had an aperture of f/1.8. But the third camera does not seem to have changed. This is an f/2.8 telephoto. The main camera received a new sensor with an increased area.

By default, the user will receive 12-megapixel photos – the smartphone will analyze 4 neighboring pixels and “glue” them optimally, creating a more perfect picture. But it is possible to save full-fledged 48 megapixel photos for further manual processing.

The LiDAR laser rangefinder has kept its place. While its functionality in helping autofocus is not rich enough to upgrade this module.

Both smartphones use optical image stabilization, but in the iPhone 14 Pro this is already the second generation of technology.

All smartphones received 3x optical zoom for approaching and 2x for distance, 15x digital zoom. The set of available functions has not changed much. The 2021 and 2022 models work with Deep Fusion technology, can shoot in Smart HDR 4, Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting with 6 effects are available, Night mode (including portraits), Photographic styles, macro shooting and Apple ProRAW format. The new Photonic Engine software tool has appeared in the iPhone 14 Pro, which can increase the brightness in photos by 2-2.5 times.

Similar capabilities of cameras and when shooting video. The iPhone 13 Pro, like the iPhone 14 Pro, can shoot in Cinematic mode and in ProRes format up to 4K 30 fps, shoot macro, including slow-mo and time-lapse. In the main mode, shooting is carried out with a resolution of up to 4K 60 frames / s, including HDR. Optical stabilization is activated, 3x optical zoom is available, audio zoom, 1080p slow-mo up to 240 fps, time-lapse with stabilization and Night mode. But the iPhone 14 Pro has a new mode – Action. It will allow you to shoot the smoothest video even while the smartphone is moving. Obviously, this is provided by a combination of optical stabilization and new algorithms.

The TrueDepth front camera has been slightly improved. It retained its 12MP resolution, but the iPhone 13 Pro’s aperture was f/2.2 and became f/1.9. Another difference is the support for the same Action mode. The rest of the set of features has been preserved: Smart HDR 4, Photographic Styles, Deep Fusion, Portrait Mode and Portrait Lighting, Night Mode. There is a slight difference in shooting video. The front camera of the iPhone 14 Pro can shoot in Cinema Effect mode at 4K 30fps, while the iPhone 13 Pro is limited to 1080p. And the rest of the set is identical: shooting ProRes 4K 30 fps, 4K HDR up to 60 fps, slow-mo 1080p 120 fps.

Conclusion: In the iPhone 14 Pro, the main camera has changed the most. It not only increased the number of pixels, it enables new computational algorithms to work, which will further improve the result. Photos on the iPhone 14 Pro will become even clearer, brighter, and more contrasting. Nevertheless, the iPhone 13 Pro is rightfully one of the top camera phones. It supports almost all the same functions as its young brother, but there is still enough processing power for this. The iPhone 14 Pro appears to be a smartphone whose photo and video quality will be equal to competitors, but the iPhone 13 Pro is not much inferior to it either.

Water resistance of iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max

The water resistance of the iPhone is no longer the dignity that Apple focuses on. Nevertheless, the level of protection has not changed for several years, and it is already sufficient for the majority. And for the market, this opportunity is not unique. iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro received an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance. It should be enough to protect the device from being submerged for half an hour in water at 6 meters.

iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max battery

The use of a more economical chip had a positive effect on the battery life of the devices. Obviously, the larger iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max also received a larger battery. In a comparative table, we have reduced the operating time of devices under various scenarios.
