Everything we know about Samsung Galaxy S23

Everything we know about Samsung Galaxy S23. Not much is missing for the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series. The company has, in fact, announced its Unpacked event for next February 1st. In this article everything we know about the Galaxy S23 series: from the release to the features, from the design to the prices.

How many models?

Samsung has a line of smartphones consisting of three main models: S22, S22 Plus and S22 Ultra. It is probable that the next series will also follow this same nomenclature, posting the number 23. And so, Samsung could soon unveil the standard model of Galaxy S23, flanked by its Plus and Ultra counterparts. It is unlikely that it will be able to change names, also because in this way it is even more in direct competition with Apple, which already uses the Plus brand, and which will probably also use “Ultra” for the top-of-the-range iPhone 15 Pro.

Design

As is now the case for many manufacturers, even for Apple, between one model and another it is difficult to appreciate important aesthetic changes. And so, in all probability Galaxy S23 will maintain the same aesthetic factor as the current S22 line, with some slight changes that will not completely upset the design.

Some past rumors have spoken of a slight increase in size for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, compared to its current counterpart, due to a larger chamber, which could slightly increase the thickness of the terminal. Some renderings in recent weeks have shown the terminal, which essentially appears very close to the S22 Ultra model. However, the leakers have stated that the renderings may differ slightly from the real model, especially for the metal rings around the cameras, which could be even more marked than they appear in these pre-launch rumors.

Precisely because of the more marked metal parts, even the weight of the Galaxy S23 Ultra model could be adjusted upwards.

As for the colors, the Galaxy S23 series could be released in different shades: black, green, lavender and cream. The novelty would be evident: according to these rumors there would be no white, rose gold and burgundy colors. It must be said, however, that these particular colors (black, green, lavender and cream) have been identified for the S Pen of the Ultra model, therefore they could only refer to the top-of-the-range model.

This means that S23 and S23 Plus could get other shades, such as beige, black, green and light pink.

Technical features

Display

According to rumors, the standard model of Galaxy S23 will be equipped with a 6.1-inch display with 1080×2340 resolution, while the Galaxy S23 Plus will have a diagonal of 6.6 inches with the same resolution. The Ultra model is even bigger, which should have a diagonal of 6.8 inches with a resolution of 1440×3088. Again, however, there shouldn’t be any changes compared to the current range, which boasts exactly the same resolution and the same size for the respective models. It must be said, however, that the rumors in the past have indicated improvements precisely to the screen of the Ultra model, even if it is not known what.

This could be improved power management, higher resolution, a higher brightness level, or even a higher refresh rate.

Again, the rumors have focused in the past on a 200 nits peak OLED panel, even if it is not known whether Samsung will decide to equip the entire range with this display, or if instead it is a unit intended only for the Ultra model .

All three smartphone models should get a new fingerprint reader placed under the screen, better than the current generation. There is talk of the latest Qualcomm 3D Sonic, which would be 17 times larger than the current generation, even guaranteeing the scanning of multiple fingerprints simultaneously.

Processor

According to forecasts, the Galaxy S23 series is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor (excluding for the first time the proprietary Exynos chips, so far used for models sold in Europe and Asia), which was unveiled last November. Obviously, this chip would guarantee greater performance than the current Gen1, both in terms of energy efficiency and performance, especially capable of supporting new camera features. Indeed, some rumors in the past have speculated that Samsung has managed to have a customized version of this chip, with an overclock capable of further improving performance.

There is, however, to compare the benchmark tests of this processor with the current A15 and A16, respectively under the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. In the single core score, the A15 also performed better than the new Qualcomm processor, while in the score multi core the new Gen2 can surpass A15, but it can’t do better than A16.

RAM and ROMs

As for memory, the Galaxy S23 series could start from 8 GB in the standard model, alongside a starting ROM of 256 GB, with a 512 GB variant. The S23 Plus is also expected to start in this identical configuration, while the Ultra model could get a whopping 12GB of onboard storage, alongside 512GB storage.

Camera

Samsung has historically a very important tradition in terms of cameras and is one of the manufacturers that can really be compared to Apple in terms of photo quality. Again, of course, the more valuable sensors would benefit the Ultra model. In fact, it is said that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will benefit from a 200 MP sensor, a really substantial increase if we consider that the current range of S22 Ultra mounts a 108 MP camera.

Nonetheless, other rumors have confirmed that this sensor will not be a second generation ISOCELL HP3, rather the old ISOCELL HP1, or the unpublished ISOCELL HP2. As for the potential of a 200 MP sensor, Samsung has already demonstrated what it is capable of, with a shot from the 200 MP HP1 sensor. This was then printed into a 28×22 meter canvas and hung on a building.

Ice Universe has previously said it is “100%” certain that the phone will get a 200MP camera with a pixel size of 0.6μm, along with a larger aperture of f/1.7.

Another rumor, this time from GalaxyClub, claimed that the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus will both feature a 12MP front-facing camera, with a later rumor speculating that the S23 Ultra will also have that setup.

As for the telephoto lens, however, there will be no change. GalaxyClub say the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus will use a 10MP telephoto camera, just like the S22 and S22 Plus, and that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will also retain its 10MP 10x optical zoom camera. As for ultrawide, GalaxyClub once again states that the S23 and S23 Plus will remain with 12MP sensors.

On the video side, the Galaxy S23 range is expected to get a new 30 frames per second mode for 8K video capture. While 8K video recording might seem like overkill for most casual users, for content creators it could allow for more flexibility when editing video.

Other characteristics

Satellite communication

For more competition with Apple’s iPhones, it seems that Samsung will also adapt for satellite communications. It would always be communications via messages for emergencies only, even if Samsung could improve on what Apple has done.

Autonomy and battery

As for the battery, however, the S23 Ultra should get a 5,000 mAh battery, against the 4,700 mAh of the Plus model, while the standard Galaxy S23 would stop at a 3,900 mAh battery.

Prices and release date

The presentation of these terminals is expected for February 1st. In reality, Samsung has officially confirmed the Unpacked event for this date, even if it has not specified what will be presented for the occasion. Easy to bet, however, that it will be the new Galaxy range, alongside other hardware, perhaps the new folding terminals.

Bad news, on the other hand, has appeared on the net in recent months. It seems, in fact, that the entire new range will undergo price increases. Galaxy S23 could have an increase of up to 20% in the list price, while the Ultra and Plus models will have an estimated price increase ranging from 10 to 20%, according to rumors that have appeared online in recent weeks.
