Five years in the making, Sony has collaborated with experts and organizations like AbleGamers, Stack-Up, and SpecialEffect, as well as PlayStation Studios. Their collective expertise was vital in designing a controller that significantly impacts the accessibility community.

Leveraging Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 28 years of design experience, the project involved extensive playtesting with dozens of participants across three continents. This rigorous process led to the creation of an adaptable and accessible controller kit that operates seamlessly “out of the box,” helping gamers with disabilities enjoy a more comfortable gaming experience for extended periods.

The Access controller’s design was meticulously crafted in close partnership with accessibility experts. It addresses common challenges faced by gamers with disabilities, such as the difficulty in holding a standard controller for long periods, accurately pressing small groups of buttons or triggers, and finding optimal finger and thumb positioning.

Prioritizing customization and versatility, the Access controller includes a kit featuring 19 interchangeable button caps and 3 thumbstick caps in various shapes and designs. This allows players to tailor the controller to their individual needs, considering their strength, mobility, and physical requirements. Further customization is possible through an array of hardware and software options.

Sony’s commitment to accessibility extends to the packaging of the Access controller, which can be opened single-handedly with minimal effort. Pull rings on either side of the packaging make it easy to access the controller, emphasizing the company’s inclusive approach.

Pre-orders for the Access controller are now available, offering gamers an early opportunity to experience this inclusive technology. Additionally, in the upcoming year, Logitech G plans to release the LogitechG Adaptive Gaming Kit for the Access Controllers. This kit will provide even more customization options, catering to the specific needs of gamers with disabilities.

Sony’s initiative represents a significant step in making gaming more inclusive. By addressing the specific challenges faced by gamers with disabilities, the Access for PS5 controller sets a new standard in the industry, offering an unparalleled gaming experience that is accessible to all.
