Support for lock screen widgets was rolled out with the release of iOS 16 last fall as a way for users to place visible information directly on the phone screen as round or rectangular widgets below the date and time or as a line of text just above it. Several developers, big and small, have rushed to offer Lock Screen widgets, including Google (and YouTube), Facebook, Snap, and others. But Spotify doesn’t, at least until today.

In the case of the Spotify widget, tapping the icon will simply open the Spotify app, saving you the time of unlocking your phone and finding the app icon or widget on your home screen. This widget can come in handy when you want to launch your favorite music or podcasts on the go or in the car and don’t have time to swipe through apps and screens.

Previously, users who wanted Spotify on their lock screen took advantage of third-party widget customization apps, like Widgetsmith, to create their own widgets.

Aesthetically, Spotify’s rounded icon also fits well with other popular circular icons found on most users’ lock screens, such as Apple’s default weather and activity widgets.

How to add Spotify widget on lock screen?

To add the new Spotify widget, press and hold your finger on the lock screen to bring up the “Customize” button at the bottom. Tap this button to go to the area where you can choose to add widgets and look for Spotify in the apps list. You can then tap Spotify or drag the widget to add it to the lock screen and exit the personalization screens.

In addition to the new Lock Screen widget, Spotify has added more home screen widgets, including two widget sizes for easy access to your most recently played music and podcasts. The app also supports Apple’s Live Activities, which bring music controls to the bottom of the lock screen when you’re actively using Spotify.

In order to take advantage of the latest Spotify news, you need to update the app to the latest version available on the App Store. Lock screen widgets are only available on iOS 16 and later.
